A: Where are you from, Larysa?
В: I am from Kyiv.
A: Do you enjoy it here, in Artek-Bukovel?
B: Definitely. Nature is really beautiful here. Besides, I have a chance to meet children from all over Ukraine at this youth camp.
A: Larysa, do you miss your school friends?
B: No, I don’t. But I wish they were here. When I am back home, I’ll have lots of stories to tell them. I think that we enrich our knowledge about the surrounding world as well as practise our life skills.
A: Are there any things that you don’t like about going to school?
B: Yes, there are. (в аудіозаписі — заперечення) I like everything: my friends, teachers, the school building and the activities we have.
A: Enjoy your staying here!
B: Thank you very much.

To start with is used to list points. Also is used to add more points. Finally is used to add more points. All in all is used to introduce a conclusion. But is used to show contrast. And is used to add points.
37 (7) I don’t like some of school rules, such as: a) wear a uniform; b) don’t run in the corridor; c) don’t use mobiles during the school day. Sometimes I break these rules.
I like all the school traditions. We have concerts or performances to celebrate school holidays. There is always something interesting and cool.
I don’t like to wear the same clothes every day. I think there should be limitations in the choice of clothes. For example, dirty and ripped clothes must be forbidden. But I would allow pupils to wear jeans.
When I go to school I like meeting my friends best of all. In school I can meet different types of people and I learn to cooperate with them.
Speaking about school building I must say that I like our school. It is large, light and quite convenient. But I would like it to be more modem. We must leam modem equipment during our lessons, so the lessons may become more productive.
37 (8) 1) І think that my friends make my school life exciting. School life would be quite boring without them.
2) I think that extra-curricular activities are more important. All my classmates leam the same subjects. But after the lessons we do what we like, what we need in our life. Some go in for sports, the other join Cooking Club, Photography course or Language course. We do things which make us different, individuals.
No, I don’t think so. Not about all the events and projects. But we may think of a special performance for the school neighbourhood.
37 (9) School is a place where we spend a great part of our life. Naturally, I have things I like and don’t like about going there.
Firstly, I met a lot of amazing people and made new friend at my school. My classmates are smart and funny people. My studying would be boring without them. Secondly, I enjoy learning new things. School is a great opportunity to find out something new almost every day.
However, I think 1 have too much homework. I don’t like it as I don’t have enough time for my hobbies. I spend hours working at school and hours working at home. I don’t consider it is fair. I need more free time.
All in all, 1 like going to school, but I believe that the amount of homework should be reduced.

39 (2) I study at our local secondary comprehensive school. It is modem and well-equipped school. All the subjects in our timetable are usual. But we have different clubs at school. So after school I play volleyball at our gym. My friends play football in the school sports ground. 1 also joined Drama Club. At the end of the year we are going to make a cool New Year performance.
39 (3) Maksym Shcherbyna goes to the same lyceum where his two elder brothers studied. Natalia Sokolova is the third Sokolova to join the City Humanitarian Gymnasium. Her brother and sister studied there, too. She is an excellent student. She is proud to be a part of this gymnasium. Ihor Ivasiuk studies at a language school. He has five English lessons a week. He is also a member of the Debate Club. His parents and his elder sister studied in the same school. His English teacher taught his mother!

41 (7) All schools are different, but there are some people who are always ready to help the schoolchildren. They are headmasters who run the school during the year. Vice Principals help the Headmaster run the school. Secretaries keep the Headmaster’s Office running. School Nurses check records to make sure children are healthy. Social Workers decorate the classrooms for the new school year. Librarians check the books in the school library. Psychologists work with pupils, their parents and teachers to test and understand how to help children study better. Teachers plan how to teach English, Science, Maths and other school subjects. Art and Music Teachers teach students to draw, sing, understand notes, play and sing from the music; Physical Education Teachers check the sports equipment and teach us to play different sports games.

41 (1) In primary school children usually listen to what a teacher says. They learn the basics of different subjects. Pupils don’t have special equipment to run experiments. Their desks and chairs are big enough for them, but they would be too small for older students. In secondary school classes are usually held in rooms with special facilities. Pupils can check information provided by their teachers by running experiments. Also they often write essays, do projects and presentations. These classrooms remind me of the classrooms in my school.

43 (5) 1. Our future starts in school.
I partially agree with it. I think that school gives us basic knowledge about the world and society. It helps us to make our choice in life. But it is never late to change our future. I would say that our future starts today.
2. Education is a life-long process.
I agree with it. We spend our childhood learning basic skills. Then we go to school, college or university to get more skills and to get a job. When we start our job we have to learn some specific skills. Nowadays information changes quite often, so we have to learn something new to keep up with it.
43 (6) Dear Tom,
Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you.
As a rule, the primary and the secondary schools coexist under the same school roof. There pupils get knowledge about science, history, literature, mother tongue, foreign languages and other disciplines in equal measure. If children want to study certain subjects more detailed after the primary school, they can start studying at gymnasium or a lyceum. It is also considered secondary education. There are about 30 schools, 2 gymnasiums and 5 lyceums in my hometown where children can receive primary and secondary education.
I think that most of students enjoy their lessons, because every class is an amazing opportunity to find out more about a subject. Meanwhile, it is perfectly normal if some pupils don’t enjoy a lesson or a series of lessons. It may happen because of different reasons. For example, a student is not interested in the subject or thinks it isn’t necessary for the future.
I enjoy studying English. I find it very useful and interesting. It is used in almost every field of life. I need it to read books and watch films in English. What is more important, my knowledge of English will help me to communicate with people in different countries. Tell me about your favourite subject in your next letter. Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards,
Jerry
44 (2) 1. I’m interested in ICT. I think it is a great subject. I want to be a programmer and to write programmes that would make our life better. So, to be a programmer I must pay more attention not only to ICT, but to Maths, Physics and English. 2. Some of my friends and my parents help me cope with difficulties in my studies. 3.1 study Ukrainian and World Literatures, Ukrainian and English Languages, Geography, History, ICT, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and other subjects. I’m interested in ICT. I’m good in History and Geography, too. 4. I think that all the subjects are important. Some of them can be useful in our future profession, and the others are just a part of general knowledge. Every educated person must know the basic of these subjects.

46 (6) A Chemistry lab is well-equipped with all the necessary devises. There are schemes and tables on the wall. The equipment for laboratory experiments is on the desks. The pupils are carrying out experiments. The teacher is giving a demonstration of the experiment. The pupils are making careful observations.
An English study has all the modem equipment for learning languages. Pupils can improve listening and reading skills, develop communicative skills and practise pronunciation and grammar there. As we can see, the teacher is satisfied with the results of the lesson. The pupils have shown good knowledge of the subject. They coped with their homework easily.
46 (7) I am going to tell you about the classroom where we study Physics. It is located on the third floor. The classroom is large. There are about 15 desks and 30 chairs for students and a big table for a teacher. At a time about 30 people can work there. There is a small exhibition of pupils’ work in the classroom. Also there are different schemes and tables on the walls. Portraits of the greatest physicists of all time are hung above the blackboard. The classroom is well-equipped with special facilities needed for carrying out experiments. There are scales, scale weights, magnifiers, dynamometers. There is nothing I would like to change.
46 (8) Dear Charlie,
I hope you are doing well. I’m writing to tell you about my school and school subjects.
I study at school number 1. It is located in the city center. The building is big enough for 1000 children. It has three floors and about 70 classrooms. A few classrooms, a library, a teachers’ lounge, a sports hall and a dining-hall are located on the first floor. The second floor is for all students. There are a school hall and about 30 classrooms. The third floor is just for pupils who study in grades 5-11. Three labs are located on this floor.
Every classroom in my school has own name. It depends on what children study there. Its interior also hangs on it. But there are a few things which are present in every classroom. They are about 15 desks, 30 chairs, a table for a teacher, and a blackboard. Usually schemes, tables or portraits are hung on walls. There is special equipment in the labs.
In primary school children learn basics of different subjects. They study Ukrainian and English languages, Maths, Ukrainian literature, Art, Music. In secondary school pupils start studying Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Biology.
I want to be a programmer. So that’s why Maths and English are the most important subjects for me. Almost all programming languages that are worth learning are based on the English language. Maths helps me to develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Also it is very important in understanding a lot of fundamentals of programming.
Well, I have to go now. Write soon!
Kind regards,
Alex

50 (8) The educational system and schools in Great Britain
In Great Britain children is required to attend school between the ages of 5 and 16. However, they can go to a nursery school or a kindergarten before enrolling in school and study at a university after it.
A lot of children go to state schools, where education is free. However, other children study at public schools, which are usually very expensive. Some of them are boarding schools. This means that students live there as well as study.
To receive secondary education pupils also can take the examination after a primary school and go to a grammar school. There students study subjects more deeply and extensively.
The school year generally runs from early September to mid-July of the following year. It is divided into three terms, each of which has got a short break in the middle.
51 (1) 1. Children can take up football, volleyball, tennis and other after-school activities. 2. In my school there is a dance club, a tennis club, a chess club, a football section and a choir. 3. Attending a club can be effective in our studies at school as it helps us to develop our skills. 4.1 attend volleyball club. 5.1 chose after-school activities by myself.
51 (2) I think the children in all the pictures are enjoying themselves, because they look happy and delighted.
The participation in the school clubs has a great effect on pupils’ personal development. They learn some new things, they socialize and they have fun.
I think there is a relationship between somebody’s interests and their personality. Active, easy-going people usually take up a sport or go to the dance club, shy and patient people can play chess, read books, play some musical instrument.
I think it is possible to attend a few clubs at a time, but you must be a very organized person. I think extra-curricular activities are an important part of school life, as you can choose the activities, which you like and find interesting to learn. And you meet people who are interested in the same things as you are.
I would like to take up a sport. It is healthy and helps people to keep fit.

2. A: Unless you work out regularly, you won’t have better results. В: I know but with my busy schedule, it’s hard to find the time.
3. A: Can I have some friends over tonight? B: Yes. Only if you finish all your chores first.
4. A: Would you like to go to the debate club, Sue? B: I’d love to if they discuss my favourite topic.
56 (8) Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in response to your article ’Should Students Get Paid for Good Grades?’
I believe that students need the promise of rewards to get good grades. If children are paid for their efforts, they will try to study better. They would learn the value of money, become more responsible. As lots of children have to study and want to have own money, they need to make a choice. Unfortunately, some of them don’t choose schooling. If schools offer students cash prizes based on their grades, it will solve the problem. Pupils will be more motivated. They’ll want to study better to receive a reward for it.
My major reason for studying better is my future career. I know unless I study hard, I won’t enroll at a university I want to go to. It is a big motivation for me. Also my parents always try to encourage me to study better. Sometimes they reward me, but usually they give me a pat on the back.
My school doesn’t reward me, but if it did, I think I would study a little better. Rewarding pupils for their good grades is a good idea which can increase students’ motivation to study.
Yours faithfully,
Jamie Cooper

To communicate with programmers of the other countries I must know English. Maths is very important in understanding a lot of fundamentals of programming. And I like Physics. I think it is the most important science to understand our world.
59 (6) The Funniest School Day in My Life
I think that last year’s April Fools’ Day is the funniest school day in my life. Both teachers and students played practical jokes. There are some of them.
When I came to my classroom that day, I saw that all the desks were facing backward. We spend a half a lesson to turn it back!
After the first lesson there were lots of people with notes put on their backs. ’Happy Fool’s Day’ was written on them. I found mine after the second lesson.
My third class was Computer Science. Before the teacher rotated the screens back to normal, I noticed that someone flipped them. I would like to know how he or she did it. That day was really funny. I’ll never forget it.
