However electronic media let us know the news more quickly than print media. We just print a few words and find the needed information. We can read different articles about the same event online. It allows us to see the situation from the various points of view and analyze it better.

1. People are always interested in news. So, it is obviously that it is the first thing they speak about. But in the past it took some time to spread the news over the country. Nowadays news is spread all over the world in a moment. With the help of TV and the Internet everybody is kept well- informed. That’s why we are called the information generation. If you are well-informed, you are successful. 2. So, when we hear the news, we should analyze it critically, because the news can be misunderstood and then we can spread the false information. 3. That’s why I think the best way to get to know the news is to check the sources of the news.

13 (7) Fleet Street is named after the Fleet River, one of the many rivers that now flow beneath London’s streets to the Thames. In the eighteenth century Fleet Street was a busy part of the connecting route between the twin centres of London. It has been called ’a double street’. A lot of things happened in its alleys and passageways. At that time the first daily newspapers were published there. On 11 March 1702, Britain’s first newspaper — the Daily Courant — was published in Fleet Street.

By the early nineteenth century Fleet Street’s newspapers had been read by both the working and middle classes.

In the twentieth century all the major newspapers relocated their offices and printing works. News agency Reuters remained in Fleet Street until 2003.

It is hard to imagine modem life without the press, especially newspapers. People read them in their free time and find out all the latest news. In Great Britain and the USA people read Daily Mirror, Daily Mail to leam about current events. The Financial Times contains business and economic news. People who read Sun Sport are usually curious about sport news. Everyone can find something interesting in a newspaper.

It is important to remember that reading newspapers is a good habit. It makes us well informed and improves our general knowledge.

26 (6) It is very important to get to know the news. It keeps us well-informed and improves our knowledge in general. The news helps us keep up with the world and understand what it is heading for.

In order to get to know the news, I read newspapers Ekspres and Den {The Day). They cover Ukrainian and world news. The main events are usually highlighted on the front pages. Ekspres is published three times a week and has more than 3.000.000 readers. It claims to be the most popular newspaper in Ukraine. Den is published four times a week. Its circulation is approximately 65000 copies per day.

I trust these newspapers. They contain information about everything I want to know.

26 (7) There are a lot of newspapers. Most of them write about the same topics. But the same topic is described in various newspapers or magazines in different way.

My mum often reads Ekspres. There are three issues of this newspaper a week. It is published near Lviv, but the paper is popular all over Ukraine. The newspaper is not very big. It has 20-24 pages and once a week it has a TV programme in it. I also find something interesting for me there. Politics, society, economy, culture, science, and entertainment are typical topics of every issue.

This newspaper is very popular. It has the most subscribers in Ukraine. It also has online version.

Blyskavka is a favourite weekly newspaper of my granny. In this newspaper one can find a lot of interesting information about the recent events and accidents, relationship, psychology, famous people’s biographies, some short stories, puzzles and horoscopes. But the information is written to entertain people, so you won’t find some serious issues there.

26 (8) 1.The newspaper carries an article about pollution. The article presents the general picture of our planet ecological problems. The author provides the detailed analysis of how the quality of our lives depends on the ecology. The author describes different problems connected with our influence on the environment. The author draws our attention to the diseases caused by the pollution. In the opening lines of the article the author tells that one in six deaths worldwide is because of pollution. This is a shocking number. The aim of the article is to give some facts and to show a wide range of ecological problems. The keynote of the article is pollution is now the world’s biggest killer. We can draw the conclusion that we should do something to change situation. This article helps me understand that everybody is responsible for the world we live in. This article made me think about the ways I can help the environment.

26 (1a) I have leamt that British newspapers can be divided into two groups: quality and popular (tabloid). Quality newspapers are more serious and cover home and foreign news thoughtfully while the popular newspapers like shocking personal stories as well as some news. The quality newspapers are twice the size of the popular newspapers.

You can also find magazines for practically every special interest. There are women’s magazines, cooking magazines, or magazines dealing with gardening, science, cars, motorcycles, computers, modelling, home decorating, fashion, sports, bodybuilding, film, theatre, music and news magazines.

This is my plan:

1. Title: a good heading for the news story.

2. Introduction: introduction of Teacher’s Day, who organized the concert.

3. Main body: who was invited, when and where we celebrated, what students did, how people felt.

4. Conclusion: my attitude to the event.

28 (6) Teacher’s Day

On the first Sunday of October Ukrainians celebrate Teacher’s Day. Our school is not an exception. This year talented students organized an amazing concert for teachers.

The event was held in our school on the Friday before the holiday. All pupils and teachers were gathered in the assembly hall. Then the concert started. Students of different ages came to the stage and showed their talents to congratulate teachers on their professional holiday. They sang songs, recited beautiful poems, danced. High school students performed several comedy sketches. At the end of the concert, every educator received a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Everyone was happy and amused. This year’s Teacher’s Day celebration was amazing!

I believe that such concerts are the least we can do for teachers. They deserve the best because, as Maggie Gallagher said, ’Of all the hard jobs around, one of the hardest is being a good teacher.

32 (4) 1. І am of the opinion that it is very important for everyone to know the news. In order to be well-informed and keep up with the world, I decided to subscribe to several publications for the next year. As I am keen on world literature, I find the Vsesvit journal very interesting. The magazine offers exclusive translations of world classic and contemporary works of literature. I believe it can broaden my horizons and help to find out more about foreign writers and their works. Also I am fond of science. So I would like to subscribe to Kraina Znan. The magazine contains information relating to different branches of science. The articles are interesting and easy to understand. I think it will be useful for me.

I’m writing to tell you about the publications I usually read.

I have a subscription to Odnoklassnyk. It’s an entertaining magazine for teens. Every student can find something interesting in it. Odnoklassnyk offers exclusive interviews, articles about love, education, sport, arts. Also there are psychological tests, anecdotes, tales, horoscopes. But I usually search for different contests. I hope to win one of them. Almost every day I buy Den. It’s a daily newspaper. It covers all the latest world and Ukrainian news. The newspaper helps me to keep up with what’s happening in our world. In the newspaper I usually search for sport news. I am fond of sports and everything related to it. So if you want to get some information from me, be sure I’ll start with the sport news.

As a rule, I trust these publications, but sometimes it is good to determine if the information is true. Then I usually share the news with my friends. We look for more information, discuss it and express our views.
