Milne also wrote a detective novel, as well as many novels, essays, short stories and poems. He wrote over 25 plays. His autobiography was published in 1939.

Alan Milne achieved the world-wide popularity due to the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh bear. This book is favourite with old and young alike and has been translated into many languages.

155 (8) Okean Elzy is a popular Ukrainian rock band. The band’s vocalist and frontman is Svyatoslav Vakarchuk. Okean Elzy is one of the best-loved Ukrainian rock bands not only in Ukraine but also in most CIS countries. In April 2007, Okean Elzy received FUZZ Magazine music awards for ’Best rock act’.    

The band was formed in 1994, in Lviv. Four young*men decided to make a group and from the very beginning there were a lead vocal, lead guitar, bas$ guitar and drums. The band spent one year rehearsing and the first concert took place in front of the Lviv Opera Theatre on 14 January, 1995. The group was a participant in such festivals as Chervona Ruta and Melodiia, Sribna Pidkova Festival, Perlyny Sezonu, Tavriiski Ihry. The first concert in Kyiv took part in 1996. After that a short film about the band was made and Okean Elzy appeared on the television.

The band plays rock music in Ukrainian and English and has released a lot of albums. My favourites are Supersymetria and Bez mezh. Their songs are about love, relationship between people, friendship, patriotism and sense of life. Okean Elzy is often said to be a symbol of the 1990s’ generation and in its music it expresses what is close and dear to our generation.

Music is a part of our life nowadays. Every day we hear it on TV, in the radio and on the Internet. We listen to music when we are happy or sad, we dance to it, learn to play music. There are different kinds of music: classical music, jazz, pop-music, rock and club music. Music reflects our life, our feelings and emotions.

I prefer Ukrainian rock and pop-music. My favourite group is Okean Elzy. My friends and my older sister also like this rock group veiy much. However, they also listen to some foreign singers and bands, such as One Direction, Queen, Pink Floyd, Linkin Park. My friend studies in a musical college. She likes folk music.

My father likes classical music. His favourite composer is Mozart. Sometimes he listens to Vivaldi or Tchaikovsky. As for my mother, she is fond of Elvis Presley. She can listen to his songs all day.

Nobody knows when music appeared, but I think if there were no music, our life would be very boring and sad.

2. Taras plays the violin. He goes to the school of arts. He started playing the violin when he was 8. His parents are musicians. His mum plays the piano, and his dad sings in the choir. Taras plays classical music. But he also likes folk music and often visits folk music concerts. Sometimes he plays the violin at the concerts in our school or for his friends at the parties.

162 (1) Music is a part of our life today because we can hear it everywhere. There are different music styles and various bands as well as singers and musicians. Tastes differ so everybody can find something interesting for him.

Music plays an important role in my life. It helps me relax when I’m tired after school and it makes me feel better when I’m sad. I also listen to music when I’m happy, excited and satisfied with everything. Hearing my favourite songs I imagine myself the main hero in them, I understand those feelings and emotions. I often sing my favourite songs because I know the text by heart. When I meet with my friends we often talk about new music styles and number one songs in Ukraine. We listen to different music but it’s an interesting topic for discussion. I can’t imagine my life without music.

163 (2) Last summer I attended a music festival. It is called ’Faine Misto’. The event took place near Temopil. It was outside. The festival lasted for four days. The weather was warm and sunny. And the atmosphere of the festival was very hot.

The technicians made large stage. They also cleared the territory on the camp site.

A lot of musicians and groups from different countries performed on the stage. There were singers and musicians from Ukraine, Poland, UK, Finland, Germany and Belarus. They played modem music. We listened to rock, folk, pop, dance music. The visitors of the festival were wearing casual clothes, usually jeans and T-shirts. During the performances they were dancing and singing songs.

At the end of the event I felt tired but happy. I like such music festivals.
