Young Ukrainians are facing a lot of problems today. They are becoming more pragmatic and spiritually restrained. Most young people have a low personal income. Among their problems are generation gap, employment, worsening conditions of young families, obliteration of their educational functions, increasing of youth crime rate, growing housing problems, crisis of culture and moral values, lowering public activity, increasing number of divorces, AIDS, alcoholism, drug addiction, violence among young people and others.
Young people in Ukraine have to be more independent and pragmatic. So, they rely on their own resources and try to solve their problems themselves, not Expecting someone’s help.
I think that the government should pay more attention to the youth on a political level because they are the future of the country. The government should create state programs and projects to involve the youth into social life and decision-making, to support and help them find their place in the society.

IS SMOKING INVASION?
Today I’m going to talk about smoking and risks for health.
When your parents were young, people could buy cigarettes and smoke pretty much anywhere — even in hospitals! Ads for cigarettes were all over the place. Today we’re more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on TV, radio, and in many magazines.
Almost everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; that it can shorten your life by 10 years or more; and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. So how come people are still lighting up? The answer, in a word, is addiction.
Once You Start, It’s Hard to Stop. Smoking is a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal.
People start smoking for a variety of different reasons. Some think it looks cool. Others start because their family members or friends smoke. Statistics show that about 9 out of 10 tobacco users start before they’re 18 years old. Most adults who started smoking in their teens never Expected to become addicted. That’s why people say it’s just so much easier to not start smoking at all.
How Smoking Affects Your Health. There are no physical reasons to start smoking. The body doesn’t need tobacco the way it needs food, water, sleep, and Exercise. And many of the chemicals in cigarettes, like nicotine and cyanide, are actually poisons I that can kill in high enough doses.
The body is smart. It goes on the defense when it's being poisoned. First-time smokers often feel pain or burning in the throat and lungs, and some people feel sick or even throw up the first few times they try tobacco.
The consequences of this poisoning happen gradually. Over the long term, smoking leads people to develop health problems like heart disease, stroke, emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue), and many types of cancer — including lung, throat, stomach, and bladder cancer. People who smoke also have an increased risk of infections like bronchitis and pneumonia.
These diseases limit a person's ability to be normally active, and they can be fatal. In the United States, smoking is responsible for about I out of 5 deaths.
Smokers not only develop wrinkles and yellow teeth, they also lose bone density, which increases their risk of osteoporosis (pronounced: ahs-tee-o-puh-row-sus), a condition that causes older people to become bent over and their bones to break more easily. Smokers also tend to be less active than nonsmokers because smoking
affects lung power.
Smoking can also cause fertility problems and can impact sExual health in both men and women. Girls who are on the pill or other hormone-based methods of birth control (like the patch or the ring) increase their risk of serious health problems, such as heart attacks, if they smoke.
The consequences of smoking may seem very far off, but long-term health problems aren’t the only hazard of smoking. Nicotine and the other toxins in cigarettes, cigars, and pipes can affect a person's body quickly, which means that teen smokers Experience many of these problems:
✵ Bad skin. Because smoking restricts blood vessels, it can prevent oxygen and nutrients from getting to the skin — which is why smokers often appear pale and unhealthy. Studies have also linked smoking to an increased risk of getting a type of skip rash called psoriasis.
✵ Bad breath. Cigarettes leave smokers with a condition called halitosis, or persistent bad breath.
✵ Bad-smelling clothes and hair. The smell of stale smoke tends to linger — not just on people’s clothing, but on their hair, furniture, and cars. And it’s often hard to get the smell of smoke out.
✵ Reduced athletic performance. People who smoke usually can’t compete with nonsmoking peers because the physical effects of smoking (like rapid heartbeat, decreased circulation, and shortness of breath) impair sports performance.
✵ Greater risk of injury and slower healing time. Smoking affects the body’s ability to produce collagen, so common sports injuries, such as damage to tendons and ligaments, will heal more slowly in smokers than nonsmokers.
✵ Increased risk of illness. Studies show that smokers get more colds, flu, bronchitis, and pneumonia than nonsmokers. And people with certain health conditions, like asthma, become more sick if they smoke (and often if they’re just around people who smoke). Because teens who smoke as a way to manage weight often light up instead of eating, their bodies also lack the nutrients they need to grow, develop, and fight off illness properly.
Hookahs and E-Cigarettes. It’s not only cigarettes that get people dependent on tobacco. Hookahs, staples of Middle Eastern cafe society, are water pipes used to smoke tobacco through a hose with a tapered mouthpiece. There’s a myth going around that hookahs are safer because the smoke is cooled when it passes through the water. But take a look at the black, resinous gunk that builds up in a hookah hose. Some of that gets into users’ mouths and lungs. Indeed, Experts say hookahs are no safer than cigarettes — and since they don’t have filters and people often use them for long periods, the health risks might be even greater. Hookahs are usually shared, so there’s the additional risk from germs being passed around along with the pipe. Also beware of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), which contain cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins, including a compound used in antifreeze. These battery- operated devices use cartridges filled with nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals and convert them into a vapor that's inhaled by the user.
E-cigarettes haven’t been evaluated or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so they don’t have to post the health warnings that nicotine replacement products or conventional cigarettes do. But there’s no such thing as a safe nicotine product.
Kicking Butts and Staying Smoke Free. All forms of tobacco — cigarettes, pipes, cigars, hookahs, and smokeless tobacco — are hazardous. It doesn’t help to substitute products that seem like they're better for you than regular cigarettes, such as e-cigarettes or filtered or low-tar cigarettes.
The only thing that really helps a person avoid the problems associated with smoking is staying smoke free. This isn’t always easy, especially if everyone around you is
smoking and offering you cigarettes. It may help to have your reasons for not smoking ready for times you may feel the pressure, such as «I just don’t like it" or «I want to stay in shape for soccer" (or football, basketball, or other sport).
The good news for people who don't smoke or who want to quit is that studies show that the number of teens who smoke has dropped dramatically. Today, about 20% of high school students smoke — which means 4 out of 5 don’t.
If you do smoke and want to quit, you have lots of information and support available. Different approaches to quitting work for different people. For some, quitting cold turkey is best. Others find that a slower approach is the way to go. Some people find that it helps to go to a support group especially for teens. These are sometimes sponsored by local hospitals or organizations like the American Cancer Society. The Internet offers a number of good resources to help people quit smoking.
When quitting, it can be helpful to realize that the first few days are the hardest. So don’t give up. Some people find they have a few relapses before they manage to quit for good.
Staying smoke free will give you a whole lot more of everything — more energy, better performance, better looks, more money in your pocket, and, in the long run, more life to live!
THAT’S all I have to say. If you have any questions, I’ll be glad to try to answer them.
IS IT HEALTHY TO KEEP A DIET?
Today I’m going to talk about diets. Are they useful or harmful?
High-protein diets. Low-fat diets. All-vegetable diets. No-carb diets. With all the focus on dieting, how do you figure out what’s healthy and what isn’t?
Lots of people feel pressured to lose weight and try different types of diets. But if you really need to lose weight, improving your eating habits and Exercising will help you more than any diet.
People diet for many reasons. Some are at an unhealthy weight and need to pay closer attention to their eating and Exercise habits. Some play sports and want to be in top physical condition. Others may think they would look and feel better if they lost a few pounds.
Some people may diet because they think they are supposed to look a certain way. Actors and actresses are thin, and most fashions are shown off by very thin models. But this look is unrealistic for most people.
By the time they turn 12 or 13, most teen girls start to go through body changes that are natural and necessary: Their hips broaden, their breasts develop, and suddenly "the way they look may not match girls on TV or in magazine ads.
Can Diets Be Unhealthy? Any diet on which you eat fewer calories than you need to get through the day — like an 800-calorie-per-day diet, for instance — can be dangerous. Diets that don't allow any fat also can be bad for you. Everyone needs a certain amount of fat in their diet — up to 30% of total calories — so no one should eat a completely fat-free diet.
Don't fall for diets that restrict certain food groups, either. A diet that requires you to say no to bread or pasta or allows you to eat only fruit is unhealthy. You won’t get the vitamins and minerals you need. And although you may lose weight, you'll probably gain it back as soon as you start eating normally again.
People who diet may get lots of praise and compliments from friends and family when they start losing pounds, which makes them feel good. But eventually a person reaches a weight plateau — and doesn’t lose as much weight as before because the body is trying to maintain a healthy weight. People in these situations eventually discover that, even if they do lose weight, they aren’t any happier.
8ome people may find it hard to control their eating, so they stick with an Extreme diet for a little while, but then eat tons of food. Feeling guilty about the binge, they vomit or use laxatives. Eating too little to maintain a healthy weight (anorExia)
or eating only to throw up the calories (bulimia) are both eating disorders, which are harmful to a person’s health. Someone with an eating disorder needs medical treatment right away.
So How Can I Lose Weight Safely? When you’re a teen, dieting can be dangerous because you may not get the right kinds and amounts of nutrients, which can lead to poor growth and other health problems. But eating healthy meals and snacks combined with reasonable amounts of Exercise can help you lose weight and develop properly at the same time. For a lot of people, just being more active might help them lose weight without even changing what they eat. Regular Exercise also helps them feel healthier and better about themselves.
The best way to diet is to eat a wide variety of enough food to meet your body’s needs. Aim to eat more fruits and veggies, cut back on meats high in fat (like burgers and hot dogs), greasy fried foods, and sweets, and drink more water instead of sugary drinks like sports drinks or sodas.
If you are concerned about your body's size or think you need to lose weight, talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian, who may reassure you that you are at a healthy weight. Or if you are overweight, he or she can sit down with you and determine the best way for you to reach a healthy weight.
If you want to change your health habits, here are some tried-and-true tips:
✵ Exercise! Find a sport you like, walk to school, or ride a bike a few times per week.
✵ Drink milk, including fat-free or low-fat milk. (Many teens mistakenly think that milk has more calories than other drinks like soda. But a cup of skim milk has only 80 calories as well as protein and calcium. A can of soda has 150 calories of sugar and no other nutrients at all.)
✵ Eat a variety of foods, including plenty — at least five servings a day — of fruits and veggies.
✵ Drink plenty of water (at least four to six glasses a day).
✵ Eat lean, high-protein foods, like lean meat, chicken, fish, or beans.
✵ Eat whole grains (like whole-wheat bread or pasta), which provide fiber, B vitamins, and iron.
✵ Eat breakfast. Studies show that people who eat breakfast do better in school, tend to eat less throughout the day, and are less likely to be overweight.
✵ Choose smaller portions at fast-food restaurants. Avoid supersizing even if it feels like better value.
✵ Stay away from fad diets — you might lose a few pounds temporarily, but if you don't focus on changing your habits, you’ll probably just gain it back when you go back to your usual way of eating.
✵ Don’t take diet pills, even ones you get over the counter.
✵ Avoid seeing foods as «good» or "bad" or eliminating entire groups of foods, like dairy. If you eliminate entire food groups, you may miss out on important nutrients, like calcium.
You should know that dieting and weight control can consume your life. By accepting your body and making healthy choices, you can keep your weight under control and enjoy life at the same time.
That’s all I have to say. If you have any questions, I'll be glad to try to answer them.
Ex. 1, p. 228
It’s Saturday night, and kids are hanging out at their friends' houses, watching movies, going to parties, smoking. And children as young as 11 are taking their first drink of alcohol — the average age when boys start drinking. For girls, that age is now 13. More and more kids are drinking hard liquor, and an alarming number of those teens and pre-teens are binge drinking, which is defined as consuming 5 or more drinks of any alcohol in one setting for boys, and 4 or more drinks for girls.
Kids are gravitating towards the newer, flavored hard liquors the alcohol industry is producing. And they’re not sipping — they're gulping it down like soda, they drink every weekend, at least four times a month. And they get drunk each time. Binge drinking used to mean drinking heavily over several days. Why do teens binge drink? Liquor stores, bars, and alcoholic beverage companies make drinking seem attractive and fun. It’s easy for a high school student to get caught up in a social scene with lots of peer pressure. Inevitably, one of the biggest areas of peer pressure is drinking. Other reasons why people drink include:
They’re curious — they want to know what it’s like to drink alcohol.
They believe that it will make them feel good; not realizing it could just as easily make them sick and hung-over.
They may look at alcohol as a way to reduce stress, even though it can end up creating more stress.
They want to feel older.
What are the risks of binge drinking? Many teenagers don’t think about the negative side of drinking. Although they think about the possibility of getting drunk, they may not give much consideration to being hung-over or throwing up.
You may know from Experience that Excessive drinking can lead to difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, mood changes, and other problems that affect your day-to-day life. But binge drinking carries more serious and longer-lasting risks as well.
Studies show that people who binge-drink throughout high school are more likely to be overweight and have high blood pressure by the time they are 24. Just one regular beer contains about 150 calories, which adds up to a lot of calories if someone drinks four or five beers a night. Drinking can affect personality; people might become angry or moody while drinking, for Example.
If you think you or a friend have a binge-drinking problem, get help as soon as possible. The best approach is to talk to an adult you trust — if you can’t approach your parents, talk to your doctor, school counselor, clergy member, aunt, or uncle. It can be hard for some people to talk to adults about these issues, so an alternative could be a trusted friend or older sibling who is easy to talk to. Drinking too much can be the result of social pressures, and sometimes it helps to know there are others who have gone through the same thing.
If you’re worried, don’t hesitate to ask someone for help. A supportive friend or adult could help you to avoid pressure situations, stop drinking, or find counseling.

HOW CAN MY GENERATION MAKE OUR TOWN A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE?
I live in a beautiful town/city of Kharkov. It is rather green and nice. But there are some problems as well as in other cities and towns. We usually complain about the living conditions in the city/town, but in fact we don't even try to improve them, although everybody can do something himself and encourage his friends to act. It’s not as difficult as it seems, just try.
There are a lot different possibilities how to make our town a better place for us. First of all, we can try to reduce the pollution of the environment, noise and the rate of crime. The worst problem the inhabitants of the town/city meet is the pollution of the different kinds. To solve this problem the cooperation with the City Council will be required. Some steps should be taken to inform people about the positive aspects of recycling. We should also try to reduce the number of rubbish we produce each day. What is more, we should think about environmental friendly technology of producing energy. The solution may be the building of mills.
Air pollution is a very important problem in our town. The biggest air polluters are
cars. They emit very toxic fumes. To prevent pollution, governments should improve public transport, build bicycles tracks, and we should go on foot or by bicycles more. Water pollution is a serious problem caused by human activities. Factories dump their garbage into the sea or rivers. One big problem is the amount of rubbish and litter. To reduce the amount of litter, we could make some recycling scemes. Also good things to do might be to add more bins to the city centres, use stricter fines and advertise the new ways of reducing the amount of litter to the people. As a result we could have cleaner streets and fewer diseases.
Everybody likes picnics near the river. After having a picnic people leave a lot of plastic bottles and packing. It is very pathetic sight. We must think that we are killing ourselves. We should clean up the place after having a picnic.
If we want our town/city to be a better place to live we’ll need Time. Effort, and Desire. To improve the town/city we live in we must take action. Don’t just sit back and wait for our town/city to get better by itself. We need to get involved. What else can we do to make it a better place to live? Attend community meetings and put our two cents in, Volunteer our time, energy, money and ourselves. If there is a park clean up day, people should volunteer to help. Get a group of people together and pick up trash on the streets or in planters on the side of the road in your community. Pick up the trash al local parks or on local beaches.
Moreover, it’s very important to be patient and realize that making a better place to live will not happen overnight. It will take time, energy and money to get the job done. Remember, don’t sit back and wait for it to happen. You have to get involved!
HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY GRADES?
The grades in school that a student earns on tests, projects, class presentations and on homework are all combined to determine the student's final grade in the class course. Why is it important to improve grades? Getting better grades in school should be a primary focus of elementary, middle and high school students, as grades will largely determine the young person’s future.
Are your grades rather low? Maybe it's the beginning of school or there is another reason? The following tips will help you improve them!
Build good study habits in the beginning of the school year. This makes it feel easier to do work because you feel like it is somewhat of a routine that you’re used to. Studying is an important part of being a good student. Don’t cheat. Cheating on a test is NOT part of being a good student, being a good student means keeping your eyes on your own test. Just do your best and you’ll do well on the test. Some tests make up a lot of your grade. Talk to your teacher(s) about your grade. Ask if there is anything missing, or anything else you can do to improve it.
Do not get distracted. Focus on improving your grade. Not to say that you cannot hang out with your friends, or go out anywhere until your grade improves, but make sure to focus. This means, if you have a paper to write for Friday, maybe get it all done on Monday or at least by Wednesday. Or if you have homework, do not go anywhere until it is finished. Work first, play later.
Build positive relationships with classmates. Forming strong study groups has two profound benefits. The first is that you can receive help from students who under stand the material better then you. The second is that you can also play the role of tutor, and answer questions that your classmates might have. Teaching others is a proven way to increase memory retention and enhance learning.
Do not take homework and classwork lightly. Even if you do well on tests, your homework grade can bring you down a lot. Talk to your parents and see how they can help. Ask them for little things, like keeping the TV off for an hour while you study and do homework. Seek a teacher’s advice as well! They have taught hundreds of students and know many different approaches to learning! Remember, practice makes perfect. Do your homework every night no matter what! If you don’t have homework, review what you learned for at least 10 minutes. If the problem lies beyond something you can control, such as a learning disability or problems at home, geek help from a teacher or parent.
One more thing that is very important you should have your own study area where you can study without being distracted. This study area should also boost your motivation so decorate it with things that will help you stay organized and not things that will distract you.
To conclude, it totally pays off if you work hard in school, not just because it’s for your education, but you will soon realize that education is the only thing nobody can steal away from you.
