1. Стверджувальна форма the Past Indefinite правильних дієслів утворюється додаванням закінчення -ed до інфінітива без частки to:

We skated yesterday. — Учора ми каталися на ковзанах.

2. Дієслова, що закінчуються в інфінітиві буквою -е, втрачають її перед закінченням -ed:

to live — lived.

3. Дієслова, що закінчуються в інфінітиві буквою -у, якій передує приголосний, змінюють у на і, але якщо -у передує голосний, то просто додається закінчення -ed:

to try — tried;

to play — played.

4. Закінчення -ed вимовляється так:

[d] — після глухих приголосних, крім t:	[d] — після дзвінких приголосних, крім d, і після голосних:	[id] — після приголосних t і d:
to help — helped to look — looked to work — worked	to open — opened to play — played to owe — owed	to want — wanted to land — landed to expect — expected

5. Форми the Past Indefinite неправильних дієслів потрібно запам’ятати.

to see — saw, to go — went, to run — ran, to put — put.

6. Виняток становить дієслово to be:

	we
he	was	you	were
she	was	they	were
it

7. Питальна і заперечна форми the Past Indefinite утворюються за тими ж правилами, що й the Present Indefinite, але допоміжне дієслово to do має в the Past Indefinite форму did в усіх особах:

I did not go to the cinema last week. — Я не ходив у кіно минулого тижня.
